This map was apparently published before news of gold reached the East Coast. Most mapmakers of the period hurriedly added the gold fields, since would-be millionaires needed guides and maps of the best routes to California. The publishers, Timothy and Edward Ensign and B.W. Thayer, were important New York map publishers operating in the mid part of the 19th century (roughly 1841 – 1861). Working both independently and in partnership they issued numerous interesting views, plans, guides and maps of the United States, New York State and New York City in a variety of formats. The varnish on the map was an attempt to protect the map from insects and the elements -- both "natural" and man-made, including smoke from heating and cooking fires. Few of these early maps survived the rolling, poking, smoking and sunlight, but this one is remarkably intact for being over 160 years old. This map is in very good condition and is mounted onto linen with age appropriate fading and discoloration to the surface. The map is hand-colored and tinted. Additionally, the map has been hung and encased in a custom box frame using the finest archival procedures and materials This map was acquired from an east coast auction – originally coming from the estate of a deceased individual from the east coast.
