William Lucas was British figure painter, water colorist, and lithographer of great talent who was active in London artistic circles during the latter half of the nineteenth century.  Lucas was born in London in 1840, the second son of the famed portraitist John Lucas (1807-74), younger brother of the artist John Templeton Lucas (1836-1880), and cousin of the painter John Seymour Lucas (1849-1923).  He received his artistic training from his father and debuted exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1856 and the Royal Society of British Artists in 1861.
